Data in Construction

Gregorio Labbozzetta our Director of Projects has recently returned for the AWP Technology Summit and was asked by a number of the attendees to share his thoughts on the trends that he sees for data in construction. We thought we should share 1 trend per month with you. Here is the first in five data management-related trends.

Data has become a commodity and like most commodities, it can be bought, sold, and manipulated. It can also be outsourced to companies whose only job is to receive, transform, store, and distribute data.

Such companies are called Integrators.

Imagine a time when Project Owners will not hold all the data but will allow Integrators to consume, organize, and serve up that data in meaningful ways. Ways that allow stakeholders to make real-time decisions that positively impact Project outcomes.

Project teams will be able to quickly analyze KPIs and spend more time on real construction issues as opposed to developing queries. Clean, organized, and actionable data provides numerous advantages, including for larger projects the opportunity for smaller Construction Offices.

The time of holding on to data because its thought of as a competitive advantage is over. Releasing the data to one source of truth is overdue, and the sooner that Owners understand this the more they will benefit.

Please feel to comment and share any other viewpoints on this hot topic in the construction industry.
